A
sunflower stem sample has many vascular bundles along the edge of
its sample. Unlike other plants, fibers are visible next to the
vascular bundles. There are a few objects that grow out of the
epidermis. The center part of the sample is called pith, in which
most cells are found.
Vascular Bundles with Fibers

Data
Description
200x
Xylem, phloem, and fibers are found
in one area. These substances seem to be grouped as
one set. The holes are xylem, the reddish nets are
fibers, and an area between xylem and fibers is
phloem.
400x
The cells in the fibers seem to
have reddish thick cell walls. Also, some tiny
substances are visible inside of the cells.
400x
Interestingly, this vascular bundle
doesn't have its mate: fibers. It is found alone.
Collenchyma

Data
Description
200x
The cells in collenchyma tissue are
small and stable in their size and shape. Some cells
seem to appear with their nuclei.
200x
This object seems to grow out of
the epidermis of the stem. The epidermis is
outgrown, and the cells on the object seem to become
bigger.
400x
This object is similar to the one
shown in the picture above. However, there is a
reddish substance filled in the area formed by the
outgrown epidermis.
Pith

Data
Description
200x
The pith part of the sample is
mostly made up of cells. These cells are spacious.
However, the sizes of the cells don't seem to be
constant.
400x
There is a hole formed by cells.
This hole is similar to a resin canal, which is
found in the pine stem
slide.
